July 2017: Announcing the Carter Innovation Studio

In recognition of the largest gift in the history of the School, made by the Carter family, we are proud to announce that the new innovation space at our front door will be named The Carter Innovation Studio.
Collaboration is the cornerstone of innovation and it sparks intellectual exploration for our students and our teachers. The Carter Innovation Studio will welcome families onto campus, immersing them in Athenian’s hands-on, interdisciplinary approach to education that emphasizes active learning, making, and risk-taking. The 5,200 square foot Studio will feature three classrooms and will include a shop area with metal and woodworking tools, an industrial arts area, and a computer/CADD/3-D printer space. Its central location at the heart of Athenian’s campus will serve as a hub of student creativity across all disciplines.

Programs like Robotics, Applied Science, and the Airplane Project will flourish, and with the addition of a new Coordinator for Engaged Learning, students and faculty from every discipline will have access to physical resources and an “innovation librarian.” This new position will provide curriculum design support around making just as our librarian provides support for research and knowledge acquisition. Our most longstanding and core curriculum classes will flourish in ways our founder could not have imagined. And, we will have classrooms that allow for flexible configuration to continue to support the interactive learning environment as technologies continue to evolve.

For years, the Carter family has supported the Athenian way; sending three children to school here, providing support for theater tech, athletics, learning services, faculty housing, and now this new Innovation Studio. Their impact has reached every corner of Athenian. It is fitting that the culminating project that emphasizes these themes will honor the Carter name and their commitment to philanthropy and educating young people for the 21st century.

A Campus Abuzz with Activity
With the start of classes just around the corner, the campus is abuzz with activity preparing our new buildings for students. The Freeman Commons’ stucco and sunshades are complete, with flooring and furniture going in this week. Next week, the data patch panel, power, and wireless access points will go in. The construction team is also hard at work installing carpet, power, data patch panels, and furniture in the Knoll classrooms in preparation to build the retaining wall and sidewalks. We are excited for students to be able to enjoy these spaces within the next month.
